Roshan Water™ was formed to address a current gap in the microbiological testing industry, in particular the rapid testing of E.coli and Total Coliforms, to determine very quickly if water is SAFE.
Incorporated in 2017, we are a proud startup company and spin-out from the University of Alberta, Canada.
Formed in 2017, Roshan Water™ is an Edmonton based startup company with roots at University of Alberta, Canada.
The foundational concept of our product, VeloCens™, was developed by co-founders, Parmiss Mojir Shaibani, PhD and Amirreza (Amir) Sohrabi, PhD through their academic work.
We believe our novel technology can disrupt the way water samples are tested, and significantly improve global access to enumerated, on-demand and near real-time bacteria testing.
In Farsi (the native language of the founders), “Roshan” means “bright” which is used to describe clear water. At the same time, “Roshan” can be used to explain bright futures.
This is why we believe in “Clear Water, Bright Future”. This is represented in our logo which indicates the sun over the horizon.
We are proud to be majority female owned, and embrace diversity and inclusion as a pillar of strength in our workplace.

A multitude of situations can cause water to become contaminated with microorganisms like bacteria and parasites that get in the water from human or animal feces. When water becomes contaminated, it can cause a variety of illnesses.
Water and food borne diseases are on the rise globally and E. coli has been identified as one of the major causative organisms of water and food borne diseases in underdeveloped and developing nations alike. Globally, diarrhea is the leading cause of deaths of children under 5 years old, with 58% of cases attributed to inadequate access to safe water.
Around the world, the accepted main indicators of fecal contamination in water are Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Total Coliforms. The challenge lies with the constraints of current microbiological testing methods used in laboratories.
Regulated and unregulated organizations both large and small that are focused on operational excellence are interested in adding tools to their water quality monitoring toolbox.
Globally, the goal is to provide a safe and accessible water supply to ensure a healthy life for all human beings.
Water that is safe for human consumption is essential for life. Not only do all people need drinking water to survive, but water plays an important role in almost every aspect of our lives including recreation, sanitation, hygiene, and industry.
Many remote and rural communities can have challenges ensuring water is safe.
Water quality testing standards and guidelines are well established in many countries; however, microbial water tests are commonly not accessible because they require a high skill level and specialized lab equipment to undertake, and do not offer rapid results to inform water safety.
The need for fast, onsite detection of harmful bacteria in water has demanded the addition of innovative and effective solutions to the water industry quality monitoring toolbox.
Roshan Water™ aims to be at the forefront of innovative microbiological water testing methods addressing these challenges.
With our VeloCens™ system, microbial water testing can be done “anywhere by anyone”.
Our product incorporates a nanotechnology based sensor in test cartridges to detect and enumerate E.coli and Total Coliforms in one (1) hour.
Our product incorporates a nanotechnology-based sensor in our test cartridges enabling the rapid detection and enumeration of harmful bacteria. The single use water sample preparation supplies and test cartridges ensure operator safety, and a consumables recycle and reuse program reduces waste and environmental footprint.
Our testing system can be used on or off-grid with water sample location data and results logged in a Cloud Data Centre for 24/7 retrieval.
The single use water sample preparation materials and test cartridges ensure user safety, and a consumables recycle and reuse program reduces waste and environmental footprint.
The vision for VeloCens™ is to create a suite of products which are similar in fundamentals but have many different applications.
Future research is focused on developing new cartridge sensors that will enable the detection and enumeration of other bacteria species such as Salmonella, Listeria and Legionella with expansion of applications in food & beverage and industrial manufacturing units with cooling towers.
In addition, Roshan Water™’s long-term vision is to deploy VeloCens™ in rural communities in developing countries to help people who are suffering the most from the consequences of drinking unsafe water.
